Part 3 Training
The final test is known as the Part 3 Test of Instructional Ability.
| Voyager Instructor Training for Part 3 is individually planned for you on a 1:1 basis. Allow a minimum of 30hrs training and be prepared to practice between sessions. Training is in a Voyager Instructor Training Dual Controlled car. |
The Test of Instructional Ability consists of two x 30 minute phases and assesses your ability to instruct pupils who may be beginners through to pupils who may already have passed their driving test. Both phases must be passed during the same test, you cannot just retake one phase if the other has been passed. 3 attempts are allowed but must be taken within 2 years of passing Part 1.

The Supervising Examiner plays the role of the pupil, and you the role of instructor. There are ten PST's (Pre-set Tests) and you will be given one of them. Each PST consists of two phases: the first deals with a pupil with limited ability and the second with a pupil with more experience. For example in Phase 1 you may have to instruct a pupil in the left or right reverse manoeuvre who has not done this before. In Phase 2 you may have to deal with the faults in a pupil who has failed a driving test mainly due to a problem with Emerging from a T Junction. In both cases you assess the pupils needs and deliver your instruction appropriately. The examiner tells you which PST at the beginning of the test and also gives you directions for the route throughout the test which you then give back to him each time. |
Your training is designed to give you a strong foundation from which you can instruct all levels of pupils on any subject whether or not it occurs in a Part 3 Test. Teaching skills and knowing your subject go hand in hand. You must for example know how to reverse safely and under full control, and teach a variety of pupils to do the same. Simple! It is when you have a sound structure or plan to work from. In many ways, this is similar to teaching your learners to drive safely for life, not just to pass a driving test. You need to be able to instruct any relevant subject, not just those included in Part 3. It is the foundation of your teaching skills and subject knowledge that produces effective instruction. Voyager Instructor Training is committed to these goals. The amount of training required varies with each person but on a 1:1 individually planned basis you pay only for what you need.
