Positively Part 3 - A Word of Advice!

What’s good about Part 3, your test of Instructional Ability?

+   You qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor
+   The examiner plans the route
+   The ‘pupil’ learns very quickly
+   All your hard work pays off!

So what’s all the negative fuss about?
When a pupil fails their driving test it’s usually due to one of, or a combination of factors:

  • They are not ready i.e. insufficient tuition
  • Unsatisfactory or incorrect tuition (taught by a friend possibly)
  • Nerves

Unsuccessful Part 3 attempts are usually due to the same factors.
So let’s look at your Part 3 Test and how you can optimise your chance of passing.

Imagine the day of your test. The weather is good. You have the whole day off work. Your new career is beckoning. You enjoy instructing and can’t wait to show the Senior Examiner you are ready to join the ADI ranks. The test is challenging but you rise to the occasion and do your stuff! The SE gives you the happy news that you have passed! You take on board his comments on how you could have improved your performance but are delighted when he says you were well prepared and kept control of the lessons.

How do you feel after reading that? There is no reason why is should not be that way.. Read the above paragraph every day and capture that feeling in your mind.

Positive thought is a powerful ally to have on the day, but it won’t work without the foundations to support it. So start building!

  • Itemise the main differences between Phase 1 and Phase 2. Why have 2 phases for the test?
  • Treat each lesson like a journey with a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning sets the destination and the route, the middle takes you on a journey, the end means you got there!
  • Be able to give a good briefing, be sure of your knowledge and what you want your pupil to learn.
  • Give your pupil whatever help he needs at that particular time.
  • Always remember that the SE is a pupil. Think of a mature person learning to drive with you- this could be Roy Cropper, Dot Cotton to name two soap characters that had driving lessons.
  • Every time you feel uncomfortable, do something about it! Keep control.
  • Give lots of praise where due. It makes you both feel good.
  • Give feedback.
  • Enjoy what you are doing, be enthusiastic.
  • Stay focused. If you need too, pull up the SE asap if your feel the control is slipping from you.

With sufficient training, and time spent preparing and practicing, you should feel ready to take your Part 3 and even look forward to it! Now read that paragraph in italics again, and again, and again….
